MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
Provide leadership and coordinate support for an expanded UN system response to ending the AIDS epidemic at regional and country level. Promote, support and provide guidance to regional and national partners and the UN system in reaching Global AIDS targets by 2020 with a Fast-Track approach to rapidly scale up HIV services focused on populations and in
locations most affected by the epidemic. Promote effective use of strategic information and documentation of trends on the epidemic and the response as well as provide intellectual leadership on the status of the response to HIV in the region.
Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
1.Take the lead in supporting UNAIDS country offices in the region with communication and advocacy campaigns and activities.
2.Collaborate with key advocacy partners to identify areas of common interest to support and develop strategic communication and advocacy-based materials and partnerships to promote the goals and work of UNAIDS at the country and regional level.
3.Implement targeted communication and advocacy strategies around significant country and regional policy events and issues that aim to support regional level responses.
4.Manage the regional implementation of events and campaigns including the development of related communication and advocacy materials that effectively support UNAIDS' work across the region in a consistent manner.
5.Manage and produce content for the social and digital media assets of the regional office including and not limited to twitter, Facebook, Instagram, UN regional website etc and support country office in managing their social media profile and activities.
6.Act as primary focal point for the UNAIDS Regional Director and the Joint Team in the planning and facilitation of communication and advocacy activities.
7.Draft strategies, briefing packages and undertake a wide range of other writing assignments including talking points and key messages related to UNAIDS communication and advocacy campaigns and high-profile events organized by the Communications and Global Advocacy department at Headquarters.
8.Manage and coordinate press conferences and line up interviews for UNAIDS senior management and responsible for EXD visits. Support the development of press and other background materials including press releases, Q&As and key messages and talking points. Organize media briefings with UNAIDS officials, advising them on key issues. This includes media management and crisis communications with a focus on supporting country offices in the region.
9.Manage in collaboration with Communications and Global Advocacy department at Headquarters video and photography requests such as Broll, Rushes, interviews and packages.
10. Following various guidelines related to Communications and Global Advocacy, develop and pitch different news stories in mainstream media on UNAIDS work in the region. (UNAIDS does not pay for stories or story placement in the media.)
11.Create and maintain a database of regional journalists and other influencers (bloggers, YouTubers, social media influencers).
12. Manage and cultivate the engagement of high-level personalities at the regional level in the work of UNAIDS, including but not limited to Goodwill Ambassadors.
13.Work with Headquarters Communications and Global Advocacy department on showcasing UNAIDS work at regional level with global audiences, including producing material for UNAIDS digital platforms.
14.In collaboration with HQ/regional Communications Advisers develop media partnerships and trainings (where appropriate) with mainstream media to ensure accurate reporting and development of regional media related policies around AIDS related issues.
15.Undertake all other related advocacy assignments as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential:
Advanced university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, public or business administration, social sciences or related field. A relevant first university degree and 9 years of relevant experience will be considered as equivalent for internal candidates only.

Experience:
Essential:
A minimum of 7 years of experience working with media, NGOs, governments, the United Nations system or other international bodies in the development and implementation of advocacy and communication strategies, including advocating, campaigning, networking, public relations at national and international level. Experience in project management, especially on social justice and global health issues. Experience dealing with national and international media.
Desirable:
Experience in event management, coordinating or managing advocacy programmes, organizing and facilitating interagency working groups, task forces and partners meetings at national and international level.
Languages:
Essential:
Advanced level of English.
Desirable:
Working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese.
Additional Information:
Positions at the international professional category within UNAIDS will be subject to the Organization's Mobility Policy. The above-mentioned position is a rotational position and its standard duration of assignment is linked to the ICSC hardship classification of the duty station.

Annual salary: (Net of tax)
USD 73,516 at single rate
Post Adjustment: 22.5 % of the figure(s) on the left side. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
