MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The mission of the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser to UNAIDS (CSO) is to enhance the capacity of UNAIDS staff to support country, regional, and global action through scientific evidence synthesis, strategic inputs to policy formulation and programming, and timely knowledge translation leading to improved understanding among stakeholders of the epidemic's dynamics and key components of effective responses. In particular the CSO: 1. Supports processes enhancing capacity through the Secretariat for knowledge generation, synthesis and strategic analysis grounded in empirical evidence and scientific research. 2. Leads development in areas that are cutting edge, such as biomedical HIV prevention, research ethics and good participatory practice in biomedical HIV prevention trials, and women and trials. 3. Compiles scientific evidence and provides advice to ensure coherence of policies and scientific understandings across the joint UNAIDS programme.

Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
Organizational context: Under the direction of the Chief Scientific Adviser, the incumbent researches and analyzes scientific data to enhance strategic knowledge translation capacities of UNAIDS, maintaining a portfolio of research activities, providing a stable source of technical backstopping, coordinating efforts in support of data gathering, analysis and knowledge utilization and translation, including but not limited to: - To conduct daily web research of biomedical/AIDS databases and electronic list serves for new scientific breakthroughs/advances, discussing implications of new developments and emerging scientific issues and their possible implications with the Chief Scientific Adviser to expand the range, depth and validity of scientific and strategic information to be leveraged in advancing UNAIDS leadership. - To provide a reliable and proactive research support capacity, acting as primary researcher on critical thematic issues, documenting outcomes of technical meetings, drafting reports and preparing notes for the record where relevant for policy, operational and decision-making bodies within UNAIDS and with cosponsoring and partnering institutions. - To analyze and synthesize information from scientific journals web sites of counterpart institutions and other sources, and draft responses to scientific queries from a range of entities including media, professionals, colleagues, members of the public and others. - To cull and group emerging relevant scientific abstracts for inclusion HIV This Week, discussing interpretation of the findings, post HIV This Week to UNAIDS internet blog, managing the site and reviewing posted comments for possible reply. - To deal with related administrative activities such as drafting terms of reference for agreements for performance of work, managing contracts and assessing deliverables. - All other related duties as required.

| REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS |
Education: Essential: Medical degree or advanced university degree in science in Public Health, Epidemiology, Immunology or related field. Desirable: PhD in the above mentioned fields. |
Competencies:
FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS - Knowledge of HIV epidemic and implications - Demonstrated skills in research, evaluation, analysis, in particular demonstrated knowledge of avenues of enquiry in the HIV research field and scientific journals publishing HV-related articles - Excellent computer skills, with emphasis on web search, databases, information gathering, analysis and retrieval methods and tools - Knowledge of key basic virology, vaccine research, epidemiology, microbicide research, therapeutics, prevention science, human rights, economic and/or other HIV-related subjects

Experience:
Essential: Minimum of five years experience in conducting research related to HIV and/or in translating HIV research knowledge to influence policy and programming or for general audiences. |
Languages:
Essential: Advanced level in English with a good working knowledge of French. Desirable: Knowledge of another UN official language an asset.

92.2 % of the figure(s) on the left side. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation. |
