MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
Our mission is to effectively position UNAIDS and our issues with key audiences. And to create, manage and share knowledge with partners and potential partners in the AIDS response. We will work across three areas: Communications, Content management and Web platform and Production.
Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Chief, Communications and Knowledge sharing unit the incumbent is responsible for the Communications unit with the following responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement media and communications strategies and work plans for UNAIDS at the global, regional, country and internal levels, including the elaboration and management of communications related work plans, budgets, resources and project timelines, and the optimum use of resources, effective processes and state-of-the-art practices
2. Lead, guide, manage and motivate the Communications staff and consultants. Guide country officers for regional and country response in the area of communication
3. Lead and manage ongoing projects related to media initiatives and media campaigns, including but not limited to first line approval for briefing book preparation from the field and throughout HQ, press materials and background materials, press releases, Q&As, key messages; as well as organize interviews for UNAIDS officials
4. Undertake the development of a wide range of materials such as overview brochures, key messages, talking points for national and international press events and interviews, press releases, holding statements, fact sheets, Q&As, newsletters, feature stories for UNAIDS Website and any other writing assignments related to travel by the UNAIDS Executive Director (EXD) and Deputy Executive Director (DXD) and other Senior Management Team members, ensuring that communications policies and branding are followed, adapting existing and developing related guidelines for use throughout UNAIDS
5. Advise Senior Management Team members and staff at all levels on communications and media related issues and work closely with Team Leaders in CKS to ensure maximized re-purposing and dissemination of content created
6. Within the delegated authority, to represent UNAIDS at communications related meetings and working groups
7. Undertake other assignments as required by the Chief, Communications and Knowledge Sharing division.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
University degree in communications, public relations, journalism, business administration or a relevant combination of academic preparation and experience.
Competencies:
Knowledge or sound understanding of HIV, implications and response, preferably knowledge of UNAIDS work and goals. Experience with media, NGO's donor agencies, government and multilateral agencies. Proven leadership, managerial and facilitation abilities. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, complemented by superior writing and analytical skills. Ability to work and produce results under pressure. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Experience:
A minimum of 11 years experience, 13 or more years of experience preferred in communications, journalism, public affairs at international levels, with some 6 years managing communication and media relations. Experience in organizing and facilitating interagency working groups, task force and partners meetings at national and international level.
Languages:
Advanced knowledge of English. Working knowledge of another UN official language desirable.
Additional Information:
In close collaboration with the International Civil Service Commission UNAIDS is developing and testing a system of reward for contribution and a broad-banded salary structure (Band1: P1 and P2, Band 2: P3, P4 and P5, Band 3: D1 and D2). As this system is being tested the existing grading system will be maintained until further notice. This post is at the P5 grade under the current grading system.
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
73 975 US$ at single rate
79 628 US$ with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 72.5 % of the figure(s) on the left side. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
