MANDATE OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The Executive Office provides vision, leadership and inspiration to UNAIDS, it highlights and drives emerging issues, focus areas and steers the organization, positioning it as a global leader on AIDS. The Executive Office (EXO) facilitates communication and coordination within the UNAIDS Secretariat and broader UNAIDS and serves as a reference and intelligence hub.
Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
The Senior Adviser plays a key role in areas encompassing strategic planning and prioritization, overseeing and managing a broad range of activities such as coordination, coherence, quality and timeliness of inputs from all programmatic areas across the Secretariat, as well as strategic expertise in coordination and communication, including not limited to:
Strategic Expertise, Coordination and Communication
1. To provide strategic expertise and advice to ensure that corporate objectives are effectively and efficiently met;
2. To effect strategic planning and prioritization of the Executive Director's agenda and the delivery of objectives;
3. To serve as focal point, advising and briefing staff across the Secretariat on the content, presentation and timing of contributions, so as to ensure that senior staff are fully involved in those issues requiring priority attention and respond to substantive requirements;
4. To ensure continuous communication between the EXO, the Senior Management Team and others when the Executive Director (EXD) travels thereby ensuring continuity on all matters; and
5. To take a lead role to organizational efforts to promote results orientation across the UNAIDS Secretariat promoting peer collaboration in support of corporate priorities, acting as bridge-builder and trouble-shooter to resolve bottlenecks in delivery of activities.

Operational Management
To proactively contribute to and promote the implementation of effective monitoring of operations under the line responsibility of the EXD and the EXO in light of established work plans, namely:
a. To monitor advancement of programmatic issues and events, drawing the attention of the EXD and Director EXO to gaps and problems together with proposed solutions to facilitate decisions;
b. To act for Director, EXO during the absences, ensuring continuity in activities and the smooth running of EXO and taking necessary actions within the delegated authority;
c. To serve as representative Director, EXO, inter alia, to participate to interdepartmental committees and working groups on global initiatives;
d. To manage, lead, guide and motivate all staff directly involved in providing support to EXD Geneva.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Advanced university degree in communication, international relations, political or social sciences or a combination of academic preparation and experience.
Competencies:
Proven organizational, analytical and coordination skills, complemented with the ability to lead multicultural teams and promote consensus. Thorough knowledge or understanding of the UN system environment, and its partners at various levels. Thorough knowledge of AIDS and its implications. Superior interpersonal skills. Tact, discretion and diplomacy.
Experience:
Considerable experience in national, international or multilateral environment, including some five years' experience in executive decision-making positions with emphasis on advocacy and political issues, and demonstrated experience in negotiation and consultation with senior government and civil society officials.
Desirable: Experience in various aspects of an UN Executive Office.
Languages:
Advanced knowledge of English or French with a good working knowledge of the other language.
Additional Information:
In close collaboration with the International Civil Service Commission UNAIDS is developing and testing a system of reward for contribution and a broad-banded salary structure (Band1: P1 and P2, Band 2: P3, P4 and P5, Band 3: D1 and D2). As this system is being tested the existing grading system will be maintained until further notice. This post is at the P5 grade under the current grading system.
Annual salary: (Net of tax)
73 975 US$ at single rate
79 628 US$ with primary dependants
Post Adjustment: 68.6 % of the figure(s) on the left side. This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
